Desert Dreaming: How to Recreate the Design Style of Hotel Wren at Home

Tucked on the edge of Joshua Tree’s mystical terrain, Hotel Wren in 29 Palms isn’t just a boutique stay, it’s a masterclass in desert-inspired design. Minimal yet warm, intentional yet relaxed, Wren’s interiors evoke that quiet, soulful aesthetic so many of us crave. Imagine earthy textures, sun-washed colors, vintage touches, and just enough modernity to keep it grounded in the now.

If you’ve ever wanted to bring that same grounded magic into your own home, here’s how to channel Hotel Wren’s desert-chic style, no desert required.

The Look: A Natural, Nostalgic Minimalism

Hotel Wren blends Southwest soul with Scandinavian restraint. Picture this:

  • A muted palette of sand, adobe pink, sage, and ochre

  • Smooth Santa Barbara-style plaster walls

  • Rattan and cane accents

  • Clean-lined mid-century furnishings

  • A touch of handmade pottery, vintage lighting, and textured linens

This isn’t the cliché “boho desert” aesthetic. It’s elevated and poetic.

Key Elements to Recreate the Look

1. Plaster & Texture Walls

Create subtle, earthy warmth with limewash paint or a DIY plaster effect. Look for finishes like:

  • Portola Paints’ Roman Clay

  • Jolie Paints’ Swedish Grey or Rose Quartz

    2. Vintage Meets Clean-Lined Furniture

Wren favors a mix of mid-century silhouettes with worn-in patina. Think:

  • Low-profile wood bed frames

  • Danish-style armchairs

  • 1970s lamps or mushroom lighting

Try: Vintage shops, Facebook Marketplace, or brands like Article, Lulu & Georgia, or Sixpenny for clean lines with soft edges.

    3. Natural Materials + Desert Tones

    Layer up textures like:

  • Woven jute or wool rugs

  • Raw-edge linen bedding (Parachute or Cultiver)

  • Wabi-sabi ceramics in terracotta or chalky neutrals

  • Rattan pendant lights or cane sideboards

Pro tip: Keep the palette dry and dusty, nothing saturated or shiny.

    4. Intentional Minimalism

Wren’s rooms are spacious, not cluttered, with space to exhale. To get this:

  • Use fewer, better pieces

  • Let each object have room to breathe

  • Leave white space on shelves or walls

  • Less “decorating,” more curating.

Finishing Touches: That Wren Signature

  • No TVs. Replace them with books, vinyl, or framed nature photography.

  • Scent is key. Try incense, palo santo, or Wonder Valley bath oils.

  • A fireplace moment. If you can’t do a real one, try a clay chiminea or modern electric fireplace.

  • Add a tiny bodega corner in your kitchen: a tray of olive oil, teas, and local honey styled like a still life.

The Vibe: Slowness, Stillness, and Softness

At its core, Hotel Wren’s design isn’t just visual, it’s emotional. It’s about feeling grounded, connected to the earth, and at ease in your own skin. When you walk into a Wren inspired room, you should feel like you can exhale.

So light a stick of incense, crack open a worn book, and let the desert in.
